Essentials
Here is a bit about us, what we believe and what is important to us. Though we hold tightly to our essentials, much of what we believe is ever forming. This is due primarily to a healthy sense of humility when faced with the immenseness of the God we serve. He is full of mystery, wonder, and unfathomable depths. Who are we to claim we have Him all figured out? Who are we to claim that we know…even from a theoretical point…what it means to fully live in the Imago Dei, embracing the full Missio Dei, for the Gloria Dei? There is plenty we can know that God has revealed to us, but we try not to speak for Him unless He is abundantly clear on a subject.
We tend to be intentional about what we hold as an essential, and also what we don’t hold as an essential. If you have any questions about something you see…or don’t see here…then give us a buzz, and we’ll do our best to dialog with you.
We are a local Community of Christ , IN West Seattle, OF West Seattleites, working FOR West Seattle.
Our fundamental belief is that the Church, as defined by Scripture (the Text), are those that are Following Jesus Christ, regardless of location, denomination or time. Ethos is a local gathering of the Church, not A Church. It is so easy to forget this fundamental belief and turn the Church into a place, gathering, or mission. We use the word Community instead of Church to describe our corporate self to try and delineate the difference. We also hold that communally living out our faith is essential for a holistic life and growth.
Our Community attempts to be centered completely, unapologetically, and solely on Jesus Christ, His mission, and spreading His love. We believe what the Text says about Jesus, that He is the one and only Messiah. He came physically to Earth (the Incarnation) and was/is completely God yet completely man in all ways. His life, teachings, and mission form the ultimate example of holistic living not only for the community of Ethos, but also for the individual as well. He gives us deliverance from our past, present, and future mistakes, our brokenness, our fractured aimless lives and Jonah like fleeing. All of this comes through our faith, trust, and chasing after Him.
Ethos is geographically located in the center of West Seattle, and our heart is for this unique part of the greater Seattle Metropolitan area. We are committed to being a local community in West Seattle, and blessing her with our physical presence. Whether you live in West Seattle or not, you are welcome to join us in serving and blessing this unique little town within a major metropolis.
Ethos is made up of Seattelites and West Seattleites. Though not all of us are from West Seattle, or live there, many of us are. Since it is our firm belief that the church is people, so to truly be OF West Seattle, we need to be a Community of West Seattleites. Do you have to live or be from West Seattle to join us…of course not, we welcome all who come.
Because Ethos exists for God, we also exist for the people of our called and chosen home, West Seattle. It is our firmly held convictions that a Community of faith should bless not only those that are a part of her, but also the larger community she exists in. We also believe that not only should West Seattle be blessed, but also Seattle, the Metro Area, Washington State, the Pacific Northwest, the West Coast, North America, and the world as a whole.
Can we do this all by ourselves? Nope, not going to happen, so we partner with other groups to carry the Imago Dei, the Missio Dei and the Gloria Dei locally and to the ends of the Earth.
Our mission and purpose is to love God, love people, and serve both. We endeavor to live in the Imago Dei (image of God) embracing the Missio Dei (mission of God) and all for the Gloria Dei (glory of God).
These concepts are part of our essentials, so not be repetitive, look below for them…
Imago Dei is Latin for “The Image of God” (you sound smarter if you say it in Latin). Ethos is passionately committed to living in the Image of God in everything we do both corporately and individually. That is, we attempt to live up to amazing call to be bearers of the Image of God here on Earth. Jesus was of course the ultimate example of being God’s Image, or representative, physically here on Earth (He had the unfair advantage, of course…being God and all)
(this is still in progress BTW ;))
